Media Specialist – Nancy Hecht

Welcome to Clay Springs Media Center, where learning is fun!

The Clay Springs Media Center offers books, magazines, videos, DVDs, computer software, maps, globes, audio-visual equipment, etc. for all grade levels to support the curriculum for students and teachers. Students and teachers use Destiny (http://destiny.ocps.net/common/welcome.jsp?site=512) on the computer to search our collection. The collection is carefully developed, taking into consideration the ages, interest and reading levels of the students, as well as the curriculum needs.

Reading is the focus of all Media Center activities. Students may check out books individually or with their entire class. Please discuss proper book care with your child and his/her responsibility to return books in a timely manner. Books are checked out for a two week period, but may be returned sooner. Books may be renewed if needed longer than two weeks. A damaged or lost book must be paid for by the student who borrows it before the student may check out books again.

Midnight's Marvelous Words!

Midnight the Black Bear is bringing us marvelous words each week on our morning TV announcements, Black Bear News. Students will be introduced to a variety of words to enrich their oral, written and reading vocabulary. Check your student's planner, the CSE website, the media center window, or your child's classroom newsletter for the word of the week.

Encourage your child to use the words at home and listen for them on TV, the radio, or in conversation with you or other adults. Talk about other forms of the word, synonyms and antonyms of the word. Consider posting the word of the week on your refrigerator. Keep a list of all of Midnight's Marvelous Words to continue using and listening for them throughout the school year.

Most of all, have fun learning and sharing new and wonderful words!!

The Tale of Despereaux

Between October 13 and December 18, Clay Springs invites you to read with us the exciting tale of chivalry, courage, and heroism – The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. This Newbery award-winning book is the story of Despereaux Tilling, a mouse in love with music, stories, and a princess named Pea. It is also the story of a rat called Roscuro, who lives in darkness but covets a world filled with light. And it is the story of Miggery Sow, a slow-witted serving girl with a simple, impossible wish. These characters are about to embark on a journey that will lead them down into a horrible dungeon, up into a glittering castle, and ultimately, into each other’s lives.

Teachers will be reading the book to students in the classroom, but you may want to checkout a copy from the public library or Clay Springs media center to read along at home. Read the book before the winter holidays as Universal Pictures presents the animated movie, The Tale of Despereaux, on December 19. You can view the movie trailer at http://thetaleofdespereauxmovie.com. Clay Springs’ media center will sponsor a few activities during the coming weeks. Watch for them posted on this website or ask your child about them. Activities will be posted in the media center also.
